From the supplier: More journalists and editors are being arrested and detained since Yasser Arafat became head of the Palestinian Authority in 1994. Because of the increased pressure, the press is becoming submissive and dependent on WAFA, the official Palestinian news agency. Arafat is said to manipulate publishers and dictate editorial policy, although there is no censorship per se and new papers are allowed to open.
