This compelling guide explains how to become a lawyer and a judge by profiling the amazing life and career of William H. Rehnquist, chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. William H. Rehnquist has had one of the most distinguished legal careers of the past century. After serving in World War II, Rehnquist completed a law degree at Stanford University and was selected to serve as a clerk for the Supreme Court under Justice Robert H. Jackson. Rehnquist returned to the court later in his career after being appointed associate justice and, later, chief justice. During his more than 30 years on the court, Rehnquist has decided some of its landmark cases, including Roe v. Wade and Bush v. Gore.

In the annals of presidential elections, the hotly contested 1876 race between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden was in many ways as remarkable in its time as Bush versus Gore was in ours. Chief Justice William Rehnquist offers readers a colorful and peerlessly researched chronicle of the post?Civil War years, when the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant was marked by misjudgment and scandal, and Hayes, Republican governor of Ohio, vied with Tilden, a wealthy Democratic lawyer and successful corruption buster, to succeed Grant as America?s chief executive. The upshot was a very close popular vote (in favor of Tilden) that an irremediably deadlocked Congress was unable to resolve. In the pitched battle that ensued along party lines, the ultimate decision of who would be President rested with a commission that included five Supreme Court justices, as well as five congressional members from each party. With a firm understanding of the energies that motivated the era?s movers and shakers, and no shortage of insight into the processes by which epochal decisions are made, Chief Justice Rehnquist draws the reader intimately into a nineteenth-century event that offers valuable history lessons for us in the twenty-first.

In All the Laws but One, William H. Rehnquist, Chief Justice of the United States, provides an insightful and fascinating account of the history of civil liberties during wartime and illuminates the cases where presidents have suspended the law in the name of national security.
Abraham Lincoln, champion of freedom and the rights of man, suspended the writ of habeas corpus early in the Civil War--later in the war he also imposed limits upon freedom of speech and the press and demanded that political criminals be tried in military courts. During World War II, the government forced 100,000 U.S. residents of Japanese descent, including many citizens, into detainment camps. Through these and other incidents Chief Justice Rehnquist brilliantly probes the issues at stake in the balance between the national interest and personal freedoms. With All the Laws but One he significantly enlarges our understanding of how the Supreme Court has interpreted the Constitution during past periods of national crisis--and draws guidelines for how it should do so in the future.

For only the second time in American history, the president has been impeached by the House of Representatives and is facing trial by the United States Senate. At such a critical point in our history as a nation, the question is "What comes next?" Most Americans have only a vague notion of the history surrounding the first presidential impeachment trial. So, where do we go for answers?
Here in Grand Inquests, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist provides dramatic accounts of two historic impeachment trials in the American past. With a keen sense of history and narrative ability, he recounts the 1805 trial of Justice Samuel Chase of the United States Supreme Court and the 1868 trial of President Andrew Johnson, which set the precedent by which our current president will be judged. The outcomes of these cases have remained extraordinarily important to the American system of government because they strengthened the constitutionally directed separation of powers. And though both men were acquitted, Chief Justice Rehnquist shows how a conviction in either case would also have deeply affected our present interpretation of the Constitution -- and, more likely, changed the course of history.

CUSTOMER REVIEW:
No One Lives Forever, Even Chief Justices.
Chief Justice Rehnquist was not a quitter, stayed with the high office until his death September 3, 2005, at the age of eighty. But he was not always fair, either. He presided over former President Clinton's impeachment trial in 1999, and concequently over ruled the Florida Supreme Court to appoint Bush as president over Gore. Gore won that election, had the most votes.
He was appointed to the Supreme Court by then President Nixon in 1982. That is why he kept Gore out of office, he was Republican! Reagan elevated him to Chief Justice in 1986. Some old geezers don't know when to give up. He would not resign even though he knew he was dying of thyroid cancer. That is not an easy thing to live through, and I am sorry that he is dead. However, I will forever feel badly toward him by taking that hard-won election away from Al Gore. He had no right to do that, no matter how high he was on the Court or what his political inclinations went. This was a major mistake, and he will be remembered for this indiscretion. May God have mercy on his soul.

• The video that helped put a man in prison for 22 years for running a stop sign.
Is it fair? The increasingly sophisticated multimedia presentations depict victims from cradle to grave, often with soft music in the background, tugging on the heartstrings of jurors. Defense lawyers say the videos are highly prejudicial and have sought to have them banned. But the Supreme Court this month declined to hear challenges to two such videos, including one of Sara Weir, a dark-eyed 19-year-old who was raped and murdered in 1993. The video contains more than 90 photos of Weir and is set

Bloomberg reporter Cynthia Cotts has a remarkable story about a new complaint alleging that 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Alex Kozinski "broke into a judicial computer security system to restore access to pornographic Web sites." Kozinski's frisky actions in 2001 allegedly included downloading pornographic movies and were said to have prompted the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist to declare: "Tell Kozinski to watch pornography at home and not in his own court." The imposing former head
• Another Shot Fired in Alex Kozisnki Ethics Investigation
Earlier this week, there was a new development in the Alex Kozinski ethics investigation. As readers surely recall, the Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit landed in hot water this summer when it surfaced that he had posted sexually explicit images onto what he believed was a private Web address. Here?s a Law Blog post on the matter, which first surfaced in a Los Angeles times article, and a Law Blog backgrounder on the judge?s ribald sense of humor. Earlier this week, Ralph Mecham, who heade

This argument is raised frequently by conservatives who bemoan "judicial activism" when it comes to same-sex marriage, but ignore the past involvement of courts on anti-miscenegation and segregation laws. Were these racist laws "clear" violations of the 14th Amendment? This was my reply at one blog...?Clearly?? Surely you jest. Such is easy to say now decades after the liberal Warren Court came out with their Brown vs. Board ruling. You have been saying all along that it never occurred to the

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
