Bred: Yes I have a son. He is looking to get a computer for college, a laptop and I was wondering what*s the best one to get. He was looking at the Macintosh for about 1400?

David Lawrence: Okay this is a question that has a different type of answer and the answer is go to the college and ask them what you should get him. The college will always have an IT department or a computer recommendations for incoming freshmen. It should either be in your orientation kit or it should be available from the school, not just the university but the school into which he is matriculating. Medical students will have premed students will have a different requirement than math students. Math students will have a different requirement than art students. But that decision is always informed by what the university says you should get. And the cooler part to that answer is you should then buy the computer from the university because the prices are always going to be a lot lower than they would be if you bought them at a store. I mean the educational discounts while they are not as significant as they used to be, they are still enough that you should go to the college and price things out before you buy anything.

Brad: Okay it*s a small school. So I will tell them to ---.

David Lawrence: Doesn*t matter, doesn*t matter if it*s a small school. I mean you know community colleges get just as much discount as Harvard does. So it*s a matter of whether or not they have a .edu at the end of their domain name and if they do and they are an accredited university or accredited college they get terrific discounts and you should just simply ask the university what should you buy your son.

Brad: Okay.

David Lawrence: Does that make sense?

Brad: Thank you, yes. They will recommend a Macintosh over the other?

David Lawrence: They will tell you. In some cases they will give you the choice of one or the other. Some universities have standardized on Windows, some have standardized on PCs. Some have actually standardized on Linux boxes and they will let you know. They will say here*s what you can buy, here*s the models. You go to the bookstore you give them this slip. I mean it*s just like buying books. You know you have to get these books for the class. You have to get this computer for in-bound freshmen. Okay?

Brad: Alright.

David Lawrence: Alright.

Brad: Thank you so much.

David Lawrence: I appreciate it. It used to be in the old days yeah I don*t want to buy my kit you know. But colleges have gotten very, very specific and some of them are actually you know, they renew the whole iPod project the UNC for example. So there is a lot of different options but the university will tell you. And just listen to what they say and they will tell. You can get above that if you want to but get at least what they tell you to get. 28 minutes past the hour more Online Tonight just ahead.
