In the mood for love? Whose heart has not been won over on February 14梩he day reserved for celebrating love in its many forms梐round the world.
Celebrate Valentine?s Day focuses on historical and cultural aspects of this holiday and the international traditions, food, and celebrations associated with it. This celebration of love includes fun facts; a recipe; a map showing the location of all photographs; a resource list of books, videos, and Web sites; and a note from an expert consultant, aimed at parents and teachers, which deepens our understanding of the holiday?s importance and meaning.
The history of the holiday is shrouded in mystery, but we do know that Valentine?s Day wasn?t always a time for red roses, candy hearts, and frilly greeting cards. Readers learn that some historians trace the feast of the patron saint of love to ancient Greek and Roman festivals that signaled the beginning of spring, which officially began in February in ancient Rome. We discover how, according to one legend, St. Valentine was a priest imprisoned for defying the emperor. Before being put to death, he sent the first "valentine" 梐 letter that he signed "From your Valentine," words still used on cards today.
Readers discover a range of international Valentine?s Day traditions: making and exchanging cards decorated with hearts, lace, and ribbons; giving flowers, candy, balloons, and other gifts to friends and loved ones; attending special parties at school; and baking of cookies and other treats. We learn how the holiday?s popularity has grown around the world, particularly in Korea and Japan, where office workers give chocolates to their co-workers on Valentine?s Day.

• Gift Buying Tips for (Almost) Every Occasion
photo by saquan It?s been said gift giving originated with the Romans; they gave gifts of evergreen branches and then later cakes and honey to signify sweetness and prosperity in the New Year. Today, gifts have progressed far past tree branches and sweets, and with so many different occasions to consider as well. And to add more madness in the gift giving customs, you also have to consider the various people and the level of closeness of those you have to buy gifts for. While gift giving can
• why ?the view? drives me crazy
Even if you?ve never watched the show, you?ve probably heard of The View, the AM ladies-only chatfest led by veteran journalist Barbara Walters. And if you have heard of it, you?ve probably heard about it in the context of one of the catfights or political disagreements on the show. Here?s the thing that bugs me: I don?t care if the hosts like each other or not, I?m tuning in for some interesting (and occasionally thought-provoking) television, I?m not tuning in to hear about how much these fiv
• Free Vintage Bird Pictures
I love bird pictures ? almost as much as I love the birds themselves. The vintage bird pictures below are particularly wonderful because of the saturated colors and storybook quality. Birds are an eternal and universal theme, so I?m sure the images below will come in handy for craft projects. The little chick heads will be particularly useful at Easter, which is why I included as many of them as I had. And I?m sure you?ll find Valentine?s Day applications for the beautiful Victorian dove illus

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets.
