Here*s the toll free telephone number 180039 online, 18003966546 that*s the number to get in touch with me on the air, 180039 online. Let*s go to Dean.
David Lawrence: Dean, you are Online Tonight with David Lawrence, hello.
Dean: Hello David.
Dean: I was calling I am working on setting up a network right now because I am planning to get a high speed Internet connection in near future. And I am going through a rather large manual of information online and I believe in my mind I should be able to setup this network internally before I connect with Internet service provider. And I wish kind of wondering if you could back me up in my thinking that that is possible to do that?
David Lawrence: Sure it*s possible to do it. I mean the fact that, what are you using a hub or a router?
Dean: Well I am actually using a router.
David Lawrence: Okay so a router serves more than just the function of serving as a glorified y-jack for all of the computers to get on the Internet and also make sure the traffic between machines sort of before it gets to what*s called the cloud or the Internet gets outside your space. That is handled as well over TCP/IP so yeah, you can certainly set it up and in fact when you think about it logically what happens if your Internet connection goes down? It doesn*t mean you still can't go and use file sharing and print sharing in servers and so on. Network printers that have been Ethernet configured and so on. Even if you don*t have an Internet connection you can still get around your local area network and so you can set this up in advance. The issue is why would you want to, just so that you can share hard drives or what?
Dean: Well yeah. It*s I want to share a hard drive for doing backups and I just want to verify that things work internally before I go and try to add another piece to the puzzle being a high speed Internet.
David Lawrence: Okay but that*s a fairly innocuous, hardly enough piece to the puzzle when it comes to a router.
Dean: Right.
David Lawrence: The fact that you can get to other discs from one machine to another, the fact that you can setup your networking and practice before you get on the net that*s fine. There is actually a disadvantage in that if you are missing something, 9 times out of 10 the manufacturers say oh just go to the website and grab it. Well if you don*t have an Internet connection, you can*t do that. Now you can us Dial-up and you could do it that way but usually that*s the case. I understand what you are trying to do, you can do it and there is no reason why you can*t and sure.

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
