Sam: Okay I am also a Chicago listener.
David Lawrence: Terrific.
Sam: I got a question about my office network, my IT person is now with Health and Human Services looking at healthcare fraud, so he is unavailable for the moment. We have a network in the office with the server running Windows, Server 2000 at the domain and we have our main access DSL access and we have a backup access. How do you configure things so that you will immediately switch over to the backup DSL line if your primary DSL line goes down?
David Lawrence: It requires a piece of gear that keeps both of those network connections active at the same time and basically monitors for activity and if it doesn*t hear any activity after a certain period of time it simply switches over to the other one and this is something that can be installed in a matter of an hour or so. It*s just, it*s a network device and you can have an IT consultant come in and put it in and it*s a device that actually runs both of your net connections at the same time and that*s how it monitors it. So if you are looking for a specific device I can*t make a recommendation because I haven*t installed one lately but they are certainly available and it*s a good idea to think about because you know if you go down in a business situation, you are going to start losing money fairly quickly. And in a large different ways if you can*t do customer service if you can*t sell online if you can*t make phone calls, if you can*t you know if you can*t provide support and so on. It*s going to impact your business so having a backup is a good idea. Do you have in the building that you are in do you have Shared T-1 line or do you have any sort of other services that the building provides?
Sam: No, none of that. We have got private contract as far as our DSL lines are concerned.
David Lawrence: Yeah, so also you want to be concerned about things like power. Do you have a generator, do you have UPSs do you have things like that?
Sam: We have UPSs.
David Lawrence: Okay and are the UPSs what are they rated for? 15-20 minutes, something like that.
Sam: Oh about 15 minutes so we can backup we can shutdown and save our data for whatever is running at that time.
David Lawrence: Okay but if you have DSL remember the phone lines usually don*t go out. So you can still keep working if you upgrade your UPSs to something more than just the battery packs that you buy at CompUSA you can get big rack amount of devices that will let you operate for 4 to 8 hours. So that you are done with the business stay should the power go out and you might want to look into that since you are looking at redundant network servers as well, alright.
Sam: Okay thanks very much.
David Lawrence: I appreciate the call. Back in a moment.

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
