Jeff: A friend of mine gave me this box she said put the hard drive in this box.
David Lawrence: So she basically gave you an enclosure with the power supply?
Jeff: Exactly. And connected it to another computer I was able to access most of the data that I hadn*t previously backed up because I backed up 3 days before this happened.
David Lawrence: And when you say you backed up how did you backup?
Jeff: I manually all the files that I needed to backup I had backed them up manually.
David Lawrence: So I am going to say this again please don*t make those decisions for yourself. The right way to backup a computer is to use backup software.
Jeff: Okay.
David Lawrence: And backup the entire thing. That way when you got an issue, when you got problems first of all the backup software verifies when it makes the copy that it has copied exactly the right data, the right way. If your hard drive is failing, if your hard drive has problems it may very well say to you copy the data no problem but when it arrived at the other hard drive that is failing it wasn*t written properly. What backup software does is it goes back and it verifies the rights. It goes back to the original data it reads the data back of the target drive you know the backup drive and the data from the target drive and compares the two of it if they don*t match you get an error in your report.
Jeff: Yeah okay.
David Lawrence: Okay so that's one thing that's for the future that's the preparedness part. In terms of getting the data off the machine do you have by the way the software to get if you are not going to get an external drive like a Maxtor where it comes with it. The software to get is Retrospect from Dantz Development.
Jeff: Retrospect okay.

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
