Christen: I enjoy your show and my question is about Spyware. I have got Spybot Search & Destroy as well as Adware on my computer. I run them both periodically. I have an option to ______02:03.03 these items that come up or delete them. And I am never quite sure what to do and is there a danger in deleting these things.

David Lawrence: No, if you are given the option to delete you should delete.

Christen: In Spybot Search & Destroy I get DSL exploit that comes up indicating registry changes.

David Lawrence: Okay you mean when you hit delete.

Christen: No, no that comes up before and after I do the scan. And but that anything that says registry scares me.

David Lawrence: Well don*t worry about it that*s what its there to do that. And there is plenty of people that use this software so that*s. You have to clean the registry, here*s what happens. You would have a tick.

Christen: Oh yesterday.

David Lawrence: Did you really?

Christen: Serious.

David Lawrence: Wow so you know how when you a pick a tick off your skin the head stays behind usually. Like whoever made ticks made their next like detachable. Right and it just and it doesn*t even know its dead. It just sits there and keeps sucking blood with nobody and the head just like you know oh dop-di-do. So this is what Adware and Spyware is often like. It is stuck into your system in such a way that if you just remove part of it the rest of it remains and the difference is, is that it can sort of regenerate its body at will, especially if there are registry entries. So what happens with Adware most of the time is they will drop an application on your hard drive then they will drop an initialization file, then they will drop a script. And then they will alter your registry and then they will do something with the browser to highjack the front page, or whatever they do. Basically they try every way they can to hook themselves into your system so that if you remove part of it, it just phones home and gets the rest put right back on your machine.

Christine: Okay, okay so it*s safe to delete anything that comes up.

David Lawrence: Right now do you have the latest version of all these things?

Christine: Yes I do.
