David Lawrence: Alright this hour*s Bookmark This, we look at the third item that we talked about today with Wil Wheaton about his little Podcasting system that he wants to take on the road with him to Las Vegas. Now you can do studio work, you can do any kind of built-in stuff on your computer itself but when you are off on the road and you have got a little device to record things once you bring it back you might want to do something with it edit it, add sound effects to it, add productions elements to it and so on. And so for that you will need editing software and we mentioned it earlier in the hour but the Free Audacity Sound Editing Software is really an ambitious project in the open source community, why the Audacity of them, www.audacity.sourceforge.net and Source Forge is, www.audacity.sourceforge.net. Now one of the things that you can do with Audacity is you can use what are called plug-ins and just like with Photoshop that uses plug-ins Audacity uses audio plug-ins, audio filtering plug-ins much again as same way Photoshop uses photo filtering plug-ins. And with audio especially when you are doing live recordings, the dynamic range of the audio itself can go all over the place. You can have people shouting. You can have people whispering. You can have the sound off in the distance of a bird chirping or the loud jackhammering right next to where you are, car horn going off, a door closing softly; all of those things need to be heard by people who are listening to the Podcast on a computer that has little tiny speakers that don*t have a lot of power to them or maybe they have some powered speakers that are attached to the machine. But it*s certainly not always the case that they will be wearing headphones so they can hear every last drop of what you are doing. So one of the plug-ins that you can use to help with this is called Compression and what Compression does is it takes soft sounds and brings them slightly up so you can hear them and it takes loud sounds and brings them down, so they are not so overly loud that when you have the volume turned up it*s too loud in your ears. It narrows what's called the dynamic range of the audio to the point where everything is much more closely the same volume level. It adds presence to the audio and it*s very similar to what you hear on an AM radio station where when people talk very softly you can still hear them very well and when they shout at the top of their lungs it*s not over powering you, right. Those of you listening on any of our outlets heard relatively the same volume level that's what Compression does. And so Audacity lets your Podcasts be heard better by people who are that using iPods or people who are using the speakers on their machines. So Audacity does other things too. It lets you add effects on separate tracks. It lets you mix out and vary the volume levels on tracks as the mix occurs. You can save it out as mp3 files, which is what you want to end up with when you do a Podcast, so Audacity streaming. Now you can also do Adobe audition which used to be called Cool Edit Pro and then the software that I use for almost everything that we do on the show and that's Pro tools which is the professional choice. Both Audition and Pro tools are used in radio stations and in particular Pro tools are used in recording studios all across the country and around the world so but if you want some for free www.audacity.sourceforge.net that is this hour*s Bookmark This.
David Lawrence: Drop the pounds and regain your health without pills or special food or expensive surgery. Get my easy to read instantly downloadable guide 10 Quick Steps to Losing Weight right now at www.10quicksteps.com, that's www.10quicksteps.com. Alright back to Mary, real quick here now. So Comcast is having issues with their system. Comcast is upgrading their system with something they are calling Bedrock and they are entering into a number of new areas of business not the least of which is Voice Over IP and they want to make sure their system can handle that. In the meantime a lot of people are having connectivity issues with Comcast in general. So it*s not surprising to me that you are having these issues but if you can be on the MSN homepage and stay there for a while then it doesn*t sound to me at all like you are having issues with wireless because you wouldn*t get to MSN if you weren*t connected.
Mary: Yeah I am connected but even when I am offline the machine loads unloads just move, oh it is 120 as quickly as my five year old*

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
