Sara Evans?s 2000 effort, the platinum-selling Born to Fly, put her in the front ranks of the most promising of modern country singer-songwriters. As a woman with a strong traditional background, she found a way to marry contemporary sounds and sensibilities with her bedrock country and bluegrass history, and, with the help of producer Paul Worley, delivered a complete, believable, and very fetching record. But Restless sounds as if she and Worley just went in and cut a passel of songs. A lot of them carry a message of hope, of making "something magic out of something frightening," as she sings in "Rockin' Horse," one of five tracks she co-wrote. But most of them just sound as if she had getting on radio more in mind than anything else. It?s hard to tell if the album doesn't know what it wants to be, or if it?s Evans who?s confused. Worley over-produced the majority of it with unnecessary layers and busy arrangements, and the repertoire ranges all over the place, from an awful attempt at swaggering R&B ("Big Cry") to the hay-bale-and-pickup milieu of "Suds in the Bucket." While the languid and affecting "Backseat of a Greyhound Bus" sticks in the memory and the sensual "Otis Redding" gets the hormones charged, too many of the songs just roll by. Evans remains a wonder of a singer, however, whether she?s projecting her clearer pop voice or calling on the nasality of her Missouri barn-dance-and-bluegrass training, something in too short supply on this uneven effort. --Alanna Nash

Sara Evans began basic and earthy on her 1997 debut, Three Chords and the Truth-- only to U-turn into poppish, radio-friendly, late-'90s fare that expanded her popularity. Then, in 2003, she swerved back to raw traditionalism on Restless, which showcased her edgy, in-your-face hit "Suds in the Bucket." Evans stays that course on Real Fine Place, with straightahead, earthy production values and first-rate material, including Sheryl Crow's "Roll Me Back in Time" and the title tune, cowritten by Radney Foster and George Ducas. She conjures the perfect mixture of pain and indignation on "Cheatin'," and projects warmth on the parenthood tale "You'll Always Be My Baby." Her stately rendition of Lori McKenna's "Bible Song" magnifies its dark slice-of-life lyrics. Evans cowrote six of the numbers, including the party anthem "Momma's Night Out" and "These Four Walls," an affirmation of domestic pride written with her brother Matt. Granted, her earthy and frothy sides each have their partisans. Even so, high standards remain a constant on all her albums. This one's no exception. --Rich Kienzle

With Three Chords and the Truth, her 1997 debut album, Missouri-born Sara Evans not only wowed listeners with her superb vocal chops, but also boldly and unpretentiously staked claim to a neo-traditionalist style that suggested she'd done a lot of listening to Loretta Lynn and the late Tammy Wynette in her younger days. With Born to Fly, her third album, Evans continues her descent from the neo-traditional high ground and her move uptown. She makes it clear she's also listened quite a bit to the likes of Trisha Yearwood and Bruce Hornsby, whose "Every Little Kiss" she ably covers here. On the exuberant title tune and on fine country-pop ballads like "I Could Not Ask for More" and the lovely "Saints and Angels," Evans proves she can just as sweetly and deftly patrol the uptown territory as she can the down-home highlands, which she revisits on the steel guitar-adorned weeper "I Learned That from You." Though not every song on Born to Fly insinuates its way into listeners' imaginations like the above-mentioned gems do, this solid, ambitious 11-song collection stands as another feather in this gifted young singer's colorful musical cap. --Bob Allen

CUSTOMER REVIEW:
Sara Evans DVD
This DVD is among a few I own that feature Sara Evans.I bought one of this specific DVD here and the sound sucked,so I thought it was just the DVD. I went to Wal-Mart and bought this same DVD again, and it does the same thing with the sound. All of these Sara Evan's DVD's have sound issues, the picture is fine, but there's no sound. Don't waste your money buying this from here because you'll be stuck with it,and the store will only exchange the dvd for the same one and will not give you a refund. So if you want a good DVD of her that actually works get the CMT one...

August 27, 2008 Album Reviews Various ArtistsNow That?s What I Call Country I recently found myself trying to hunt down the song ?Flagpole Sitta?, a Harvey Danger hit from 1997 that isn?t available for download. • Monday Discussion: Pop Songs that Country Artists Should Cover
August 25, 2008 Discussion, Open Thread While we?re all fans of country music here, many of us enjoy other styles as well, be it rock, rap, jazz, classical or R&B. Sometimes, the songs from those genres would be perfect fits for country artists. I?m going to match up a few, and I invite you to do the same in the comments. I?ll start with John Lennon, the guy who is responsible for 80% of the Beatles songs I love and the only one that I enjoy the solo work of, too. I was going to recomm
