Sammy Sosa is not called "Slammin' Sammy" for nothing. This powerhouse slugger from the Chicago Cubs achieved a feat many thought to be impossible -- beating Roger Maris's home-run record. Along with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa captivated the attention of the world and helped to revitalize the popularity of the sport of baseball as he kept the home-run record race alive. Sammy's unselfish and playful attitude, together with his amazing athletic ability, make him a role model for young and old alike. The eighteenth biography in this popular series documents the rise of this baseball star from his youth in the Dominican Republic to role of baseball superstar.

" How did Sammy Sosa, who never played an inning of organized baseball until he was fourteen, go from a life of crushing poverty to superstardom in the major leagues? In SOSA, Sammy tells his story in his own words. The result is a moving, intimate chronicle of a man whose charisma, joy, and sportsmanship-combined with awesome talent-make him a favorite of baseball fans everywhere, an unsurpassed hero in his homeland, and a true international ambassador of the game.
Here Sammy sets the record straight and reveals the forces that shaped him as a human being. We read about a boy who, after his father's death, must drop out of school to help put food on his family's table. We meet the American businessman who bought Sammy his first baseball glove and knew that Sammy's work ethic and determination would be the key to his success. We watch Sammy's numerous attempts to get signed to a pro contract, with one rejection after another. And when he finally gets his break, we follow Sammy as he leaves behind his tearful mother to become a rookie speaking only Spanish in the lowest levels of the American minor leagues.
Sammy's first years in the big leagues were exciting seasons. His eagerness to succeed made him an impatient hitter, and here, for the first time, he tells the inside story of his rise to stardom...a journey that culminated in his hypercharged slugging battle with Mark McGwire in 1998, when his simple love of baseball captured the hearts of fans and nonfans alike. A story of courage, generosity, and humility, SOSA is the autobiography of a man who transcends his game."

A fellow villager tells his eyewitness account of Sammy Sosa's unbelievable journey from the Caribbean sugarcane plantation where he was born, into the hearts of American baseball fans. In vividly intimate language, Dominican journalist Julio C. Malone brilliantly weaves together the inspiring story of an international sports icon with the seductive, untold story of how politics and baseball have historically linked the destinies of the Dominican Republic and the United States. This is not a story of David and Goliath-but of a stormy, never-ending love affair most often consummated on baseball diamonds here and there.
In this unique love story, the very spirit of baseball is the invincible hero that fights social injustice, improves the human condition, transforms communities and wins our hearts. Capturing the raw magic of life in a Dominican sugarcane village, you will discover why so many record-shattering players emerge from its staggering poverty to thrill-and earn-millions in America's favorite pastime.
This gripping tale will appeal to baseball fans and non-fans alike. Sammy Sosa in 9 Innings is remarkable storytelling to be enjoyed by all who love tales of sportsmanship, and of winning against all odds. A must read for our youth, who are hungry for living heroes and rich history lessons that genuinely entertain.

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
