phishing

A very special and dangerous fishing expedition.

If you are approached, via instant messaging or via email, for any personal information, there's a good chance you're a potential victim of "phishing."

Phishing is the act of casting about on the Internet to try and steal your personal information: names, addresses, social security numbers, usernames and passwords and more. To do so, phishers will create very official looking email messages from banks, ISP's like AOL, PayPal, eBay and others. The phisher's email usually claims that unless you click on a link in the email and log on to the site to correct your information, that your account will be cancelled (or some other dire consequence).

The problem: the link goes not to the actual bank or service site, but to a look-a-like site that simply asks you to sign in - with a fake form that is a direct path to the criminal's data collector. Once you've given up your username and password (and maybe other information on that fake sign-in form), you're thenredirected to the real site, and your information has been successfully "phished."

Do not respond to any email or instant message that asks you to sign in and correct anything. Sites will ask you when you sign in on your own to make account corrections.

Return to Sender: The Enterprise Response to Phishing and Spam
By: IDC
List Price: $3,500.00
Amazon Price: $3,500.00

Product Description

This IDC study provides up-to-date information on the challenges facing enterprises having difficulty managing spam and, perhaps more importantly, the potential for fraud from "phishing" end users into fake Web sites. By addressing technological and cultural issues, the study allows CIOs to make the right choices and to keep abreast of the fast-changing world of online fraud.

Now a global problem, phishing requires a complex response that involves end users, vendors, and government agencies. Organizations wanting to assess their vulnerability, and get a sense of what to do next, would benefit from this study, which includes the latest in industry and IDC research and analysis.

"Security vulnerabilities opened up through employee inboxes are becoming more costly to organizations, given the rise in the number and sophistication of attacks," said David Senf, program manager, ITBE. "Any threats to the security of an organization's people, process, policy, and technology need to be addressed in concert to proactively protect against losses due to phishing and spam."
