First, it was simple indigestion. Then, lethargy, and finally pets were dying. Why? Tainted pet food, eventually recalled and taken off the shelves by several manufacturers.
The pet food recall of 2007 cast a light not only on the incestuous nature of the few manufacturers in existence, but also a harsh glare on what little differences actually exist between brands whose cost vary as widely as the design depth of their brands and labels. It also turned the attention of American pet owners on the use of melamine, a plastic used here in dishes, but legally used in China in fertilizer - for soil that raised some of the ingredients that went into the tainted pet food that was recalled.
What's legal in China has turned deadly here in the States.

Product Description
Marion Nestle, acclaimed author of Food Politics, now tells the gripping story of how, in early 2007, a few telephone calls about sick cats set off the largest recall of consumer products in U.S. history and an international crisis over the safety of imported goods ranging from food to toothpaste, tires, and toys. Nestle follows the trail of tainted pet food ingredients back to their source in China and along the supply chain to their introduction into feed for pigs, chickens, and fish in the United States, Canada, and other countries throughout the world. What begins as a problem "merely" for cats and dogs soon becomes an issue of tremendous concern to everyone. Nestle uncovers unexpected connections among the food supplies for pets, farm animals, and people and identifies glaring gaps in the global oversight of food safety.

CUSTOMER REVIEW:
Shock to the System by Catherine O'Driscoll
Most interesting book regarding vaccines, pet food, etc. This British author has done much research, but tends to agree that not all dogs and cats are suited to a raw diet (which I feed), but points out that some do better on cooked or even dry food depending upon their age or circumstances. She has done extensive research on diseases and vaccines which I found most informative. A lot of technical reading and much to absorb.

Canine Cooking That Will Have Them Begging for More
Which do you think your dog would prefer: dry kibble, mushy canned food, or a nice, nutritionally sound helping of Tuna Togetherness? Not surprisingly, most dogs would be happier -- and healthier -- with the latter, considering the dangerous preservatives, questionable ingredients, and mysterious flavoring agents often used in commercial dog food.
That's why Rudy Edalati cooked up Barker's Grub, a cookbook filled with wholesome, easy-to-prepare meals for your mutt or your pedigreed pooch -- and you'll find all the necessary ingredients in your fridge or at the local supermarket. She includes not only fun everyday meals, but healing meals for specific health problems, as well as special diets for different life stages, such as:
* Lo Mein Barking Style: the doggie alternative for Chinese takeout
* Beef Puppy Food: just the right mix for a growing dog
* Davie's Juicy Jiggly-Wiggly Anemia Diet: a blood-boosting dish of liver, rice, and spinach
Barker's Grub is informative (there's lots of canine nutritional information to chew on), inspiring, and just plain fun. The recipes are simple and quick -- after all, it's not just about health and longevity, it's about making the most of the time you and your dog spend together.

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence.
