silly thriller
This is one of those silly thrillers that reveals the truth at the end of the movie. Thomas Gordan (Babee) is next door neighbors to Rutger Hauer (Keith) who is in 1nvolved in a accident after a angry fight with his wife Vera (Virgina Madsen) over his infidelity with Lois (Shannon Whirry). The result of the accident leaves Keith in a vegetated state or so we think because it seems keith can talk, but only to Babee and convinces the young man into believing that everybody around him is out to get him. Babee agrees to help keith in finding out the truth, what follows is that anyone keith finds suspicious ends up dead. Apparently at the hands of Keith,or so we think. I found this movie intriguing due to the atmosphere but the characters uninteresting.Could have been more sensual with Virginia Madsen playing the unfulfilled wife who comes on to Babee. The acting is solid, and Shannon Whirry is alluring in a few scenes, overall the movie is worth seeing. But you end up with the feeling that you expected better.

Saffron Burrows (Deep Blue Sea) and Peter Mullan (Trainspotting) deliver riveting performances (Newsday) in this tale of desire, passion and betrayal that pits upper class against lower class in a 'superbly staged battle between the sexes (Detour). With a script basedon August Strindberg's famous play and written for the screen by Helen Cooper, Miss Julie director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) presents a taut and intimate story, holding you with the intensity of his vision and his mastery of nuance (Los Angeles Times) from beginning to end. On a late 19th-century estate, a celebration of wine and beer lets loose inhibitions and innerpassions. Jean (Mullan), the Count's footman, takes the advances of the Count's daughter (Burrows) too far with a scandalous encounter in the kitchen. And over one night, it becomes clear that these two lost souls desperately need each other in order to escape the confinesand trappingsof their lives. But can a servant support a noblewoman, who, without her father's money, is no more privileged than he?

R&B sensation Usher stars as a popular DJ Darrell who saves the life of a young woman (Emmanuelle Chriqui) who turns out to be the daughter of a high-ranking mobster (Chazz Palminteri). When the mobster decides that Darrell could be put to good use the hapless DJ gets sucked into the crime underworld. R&B star Usher makes an assured screen debut in this mix of mob movie and romantic comedy. Chazz Palminenteri co-stars as the friendly don who recruits family friend Darrell (Usher) to play bodyguard for his daughter Dolly (Emmanuelle Chiriqi). She and Darrell have been friends since they were kids but the seven years since they last saw each other have changed things. She's grown into a headstrong young law student with a yen for yoga and a smug yuppie boyfriend (Geoff Stults); he's grown into an ultra-smooth chick magnet with dreams of starting his own record company. They're destined for each other but there's not only the racial issue in their way--someone's trying to take over the family business via treachery and bullets and Darrell's right in the thick of things. When the interracial romance isn't heating up the screen there's plenty of raucous comedy supplied by Anthony Fazio as Dolly's pseudo-gangsta younger brother Kevin Hart as Darrell's loudmouthed co-DJ and a bulldog with an unfortunate digestion problem. Director Ron Underwood takes his time going around the more edgy turns in the script giving the actors room to stretch out and get comfortable in their characters and surroundings and helping the film transcend its more formulaic elements (it's an obvious nod to the 1992 Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner chestnut THE BODYGUARD). Best of all Usher proves his game extends to the big screen where he displays plenty of debonair warmth and easygoing charm.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: PG-13 UPC: 031398191209 Manufacturer No: 19120

Without becoming didactic, The Missiles of October does an outstanding job of presenting many points of view on the Cuban missile crisis. The film humanizes Kennedy's near impossible task of avoiding war without compromising national security. The earnestness of this 1974 made-for-television dramatization may briefly remind one of social studies class--indeed it is at times difficult to maintain consciousness while the extensive cast of characters is being introduced at the opening. Not to worry, though--soon the power plays begin and The Missiles of October becomes completely gripping. Actual news footage is spliced in with the action, nicely serving as exposition and driving home just how very close the world came to nuclear war. A crew of excellent character actors flesh out the story and reveal the psychological games behind the language of diplomacy. William Devane takes on the difficult task of playing John F. Kennedy. While he doesn't quite capture Kennedy's charisma, he does occupy the role comfortably and effectively conveys the president's deep worry and determination to avoid war. Martin Sheen plays an engaging Robert Kennedy and Michael Lerner, oddly enough, manages to make Pierre Salinger absolutely fascinating. --Ali Davis

Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust is by consensus the great Hollywood novel, a poison-pen letter aimed squarely at the tinsel heart of the movie biz. Only in the 1970s could Hollywood actually hazard a film of this story, and the result is suitably corrosive. William Atherton is the observer Tod, Karen Black the blond starlet Faye, and Donald Sutherland the hulking Homer--but they are easily out-acted by the colorful supporting cast. In particular, Burgess Meredith's exhausted showbizzy salesman and Billy Barty's strutting dwarf are superbly crafted gargoyles in this Hollywood wax museum. Director John Schlesinger piles on the rancid atmosphere and rampant hypocrisy until the movie fairly drowns in its own grotesque vision. Long before the climactic apocalyptic riot, the film has torn itself up. There's no substitute for West's wicked prose, so the adaptation comes across as a literal-minded screech rather than a true bonfire of the vanities. --Robert Horton
