Next: David Lawrence's Personal Netcast - 10/8/2005 >>
David Lawrence: Yeah that is actually a known bug in Windows 98. And you know how you listen to the show a lot.
Jim: Yes.
David Lawrence: Okay you know every so often I will say in the air hey if you send me an E-mail I will send you back a fairly lengthy set of instructions on how to fix this sort of thing. And there is not only a Microsoft knowledge base article about his but also some basic things that you can do from that article that can help correct to this. What happens is in Windows 98 is that a background of process will keep running and running and running and running while your machine is trying to shut down. And you will never get to the screen that says you can safely turn off your computer now. And so what this knowledge based article does and I will send you the actual long huge URL that will take you to the article if you just drop me a piece of E-mail those of you are at the Windows 98 users. And this is I would imagine as Windows 98 SE second edition.
Jim: No it*s the first edition.
David Lawrence: Okay so the first thing is I am going to tell you to do is to upgrade SE and I would suggest you do that as well because of the security issues. It doesn*t require more RAM although 256 maximum RAM for windows 98 SE is the most you can use and is the optimal amount that you can use. And wont be recognized unless you make a change to your system .ini file and by the way I want charge you $99 for this information you can just send me an e-mail and I will send you back the information how to do one of two things. Number one correct the issue with your machine so that it does shut down and then two once you do upgrade the Windows 98 SE and you can get these upgrades on eBay you can find them at Amazon every so often though I have them available for sale through their third party vendors in the Amazon stores, eBay stores same thing. Sometimes even Wal-Mart has them I have had calls as recently as 46 months ago where people who work at Wal-Mart have called the show and say yeah we got them on the show off right there Windows 98 second edition upgrade kit. So they are still available but do be aware that eventually you are going to have to move on to some more current flavor of Windows because Microsoft has said we are just about done with Windows 98 SE support they extended it once and I think it sort of runs out at the beginning of next year. So be think in about what you are going to do for a long term solution. But at least we can get you through this little patch. Send me an E-mail david@onlinetonight.com and I will pop you back an E-mail via an auto response that shows you how to get your machine to be able to shut down with Windows 98 alright.
Jim: Thank you very much.

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
