John: The first one my XP box I am having some weird issues I am running a high-end audio interface by Yamaha and I think I may have either a driver conflict or my Windows explorer or Internet Explorer is corrupt and was wondering how do I diagnose that and if necessary reinstall the Internet Explorer.

David Lawrence: Well the reinstalling Internet Explorer doesn*t really happen in Windows. It just gets updated.

John: Oh no.

David Lawrence: So you have to go to www.windowsupdate.com it will download the latest version for you and install it that*s one way to do it. You know the driver, have you gone to your control panels and looked at your hardware devices, your device manager to see what whether or not there is any exclamation point*s or any question marks or anything like that.

John: Everything is happy and the device manager however when the device is powered on that*s when I seem to have problems more often than not where the system is responding I can open Windows and everything else but I cant shut down, reboot or anything like that.

David Lawrence: Okay now even though the promise of USB and Firewire and what not PCMCIA is that you can plug in while everything is running, everything is screening and no problem it will take it and be nice and polite about it that is hardly the case. In fact one of the things I picked up today was Edirol UA 25 which is a USB 2.0 audio interface from a 12 inch PowerBook it will work on a Windows machine as well. And they are very clear in the manuals for this and for some of the other devices that I recently purchased that are interface oriented devices either running off of USB power or running powered with the plug. That you should not turn the power on and off or disconnect or connect which kind of sucks because when you think about an iPod you stick in another thing all the time while your machine is running other applications. It say so right in the inside cover and I am like well then you know come on if that*s the case then why say you know easily interfaces with your computer. What you have to do then is you have to shut down all the applications, shut down your computer, turn on the device after its been plugged in, plug in the device, turn the device on, reboot your computer well that*s hardly convenient but that*s what they want you to do. Now I don*t know if the driver conflict that you describe occurs when you do it that way. But if it doesn*t then it*s not a matter of their being a driver conflict and their being a correctable driver conflict. What it means is the system is getting confused and that happens all the time where it goes to like for example on the Macintosh. It will go and look for Core Audio or on Windows it will look for ACO. It goes and looks for a particular layer or particular driver and it sees something new being introduced and it goes wow, hey, hey hold on a second. I wasn*t looking for that you know and then everything goes ________1:06:18. So my question is does that happen when you just simply shut everything down and start up with the Yamaha turned on?

John: It does not consistently but more often than not it does happen that way.
