A respected producer and songwriter in his own right, A.B. Quintanilla III will probably be best remembered as the producer, collaborator, and brother of Selena. In recent years, he's been working with the Texas Kumbia Kings, a young quintet packaged much like 'N Sync or Boys II Men, and the partnership has been successful enough to gain platinum album sales in the U.S. and Latin America. The music is a modern mix of tejano, cumbia, reggae, and hot-buttered R&B that is polished to the kind of bright sheen only a high-end producer can manage. The band's fourth album, 4, sticks with this formula while again featuring lyrics in both Spanish and English. For those not familiar with the band or its sound, the liberal use of accordion (cumbia's main instrument) may seem at odds with the poppy modern style and R&B vocal harmonies, but it actually provides enough grit to nicely balance the band's glossier modern moments. A bevy of high-profile guests pops up on Amor, Familia y Respeto --Sheila E., Chris Perez, Nu Flavor, Fito Olivares, even talk-show host Cristina--but A.B. Quintanilla y los Kumbia Kings remain front and center on their inspired debut album. Much like he did with his late sister Selena, Quintanilla fuses the traditional cumbia sound with reggae, rap, rock, and dance music on songs such as "Azúcar," "Fuiste Mala," and "Reggae Kumbia," turning the Tejano sound on its head. The group also dabbles in old-school R&B on "Together," featuring vocals by the late Roger Troutman, and "U Don't Love Me," a silky crossover-hit ballad. Amor, Familia y Respeto also features "Oh No," a sweet cumbia cowritten by Selena that she never had the chance to record, but which her brother included here as a tribute. --Joey Guerra

It's impossible to keep a great band--namely the Kumbia Kings--down. A.B. Quintanilla III's bilingual outfit has undergone major line-up changes (including the addition of Chris Perez as a guitarist) and still struggles with an often-distracting, ghetto-fabulous image. But Fuego, the Kings' fourth proper studio album, is a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience, proffering an enticing recipe of cumbia, hip-hop and R&B rhythms. As is now custom, the Kings include a couple of topsy-turvy remakes, including Musical Youth's 1983 smash, "Pass the Dutchie," and "Ella Sabe," a psychedelic rendition of Steely Dan's "Do It Again." There's also a clever sampling of the classic club ditty "The Roof is On Fire" during the title track. High-profile guests, including Noel from Sin Bandera and teen singer Belinda, also add to the glitter. But it's ultimately the Kings' innovative sound that remains front-and-center on standout tracks "Viento" and "Ay Amor." --Joey Guerra

A.B. Quintanilla III wants to have it both ways. The writer, producer, and brother of murdered Tejano goddess Selena has split the sophomore album from his band Los Kumbia Kings into English and Spanish halves. There's no strong connection between the two collections of songs, but Shhh! is still an enjoyable enough listen. Much like he did with the music of Selena, Quintanilla infuses the album's cumbia rhythms with pop, hip-hop, and R&B elements. By now, though, the trick has become a bit predictable. Songs such as "Me Enamoré" and "Me Estoy Muriendo" could easily be switched with any of the tracks on the Kumbia Kings' first album, Amor, Familia y Respeto. Better are Shhh!'s English-language tracks, which showcase a genuine hip-hop sensibility. It's easy to imagine acts such as Next or Sisqo crooning gems such as "Say It (a Million Times)," "Think'n About U," and the Rodney Jerkins-esque "In Da Zone." If they pursue that route, Quintanilla may find himself basking in the crossover success sister Selena never had a chance to enjoy. --Joey Guerra

A.B and the boys have taken tejano music to a whole new level! Theirsong mixtures of tejano and hip-hop bring out a new funk, which makes everyone want to dance! This CD is made up of their greatest hits in their first three albums. So I would difiinetly recommend this CD, because if U thought that the first three CD"s were great, then this Album should be beyond great sense this is their song history. 4 you tejano fans, who need a bit of a slower tempo change, well don't worry because this CD has it all. It has your favorite slow and fast songs, which will keep you listening for years to come. Come on and get a taste of some excellent tejao jams! P.S this CD also contains a few songs in English!

One nonobvious fact about me is that I am a gigantic fan of Selena, the Tejano singer born in Corpus Christi who was killed by her fan club manager at the early age. News of the murder came to me just days after I learned after I would go to Albania for the Peace Corps.
