Even as Hurricane Ernesto was leaving a weak, soggy wake in the
Atlantic, Hurricane John exploded to at Category 4 hurricane off the
coast of Mexico wreaking havoc on vacations and homes. Hurricane
John is the 4th named storm to become a Hurricane in the Pacific. The
Atlantic had a comparatively quiet start with Ernesto as the first
storm to reach hurricane status.
Category 4 hurricanes are relatively rare and can produce wind speeds
over 135 miles per hour. However, the most deadly aspect of any
hurricane is flooding as so many witnessed last year in the wake of
Hurricane Katrina. The Western US is rarely threatened by hurricanes
due to the cold currents of the East Pacific Ocean

The Hurricane saw widespread action with Allied forces, as the RAF's first monoplane fighter. This book describes its many feats throughout 1945. It served as a fighter-bomber on the Channel Front, where the American Eagles and Polish units were amongst the Fighter Command squadrons flying the Hurricane, and where some of its highest-scoring aces operated. The Sea Hurricane was the principal fighter deployed by the Fleet Air Arm in the Mediterranean, and Hurricane units continued to operate from bases in India and Ceylon until 1945, following their failure to defend Singapore and Malaya from the Japanese.

This book gathers together responses to the hurricane from over thirty contributors, including community activists, sociologists, writers and musicians. Some have been displaced by the hurricane and write about what they have lost. Others write from a distance, seeing patterns in the response to the hurricane that reflect a cultural bias of race and class. Together they offer not only critical assessments of what went wrong, but also hopeful conjecture about possibilities for the future of New Orleans, the Gulf Coast and the United States.

Americans will long remember 2005 as the year Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast states, killing thousands and destroying everything in its path. Lives were changed forever. Once the hurricane passed, the city of New Orleans faced even more danger. The city s protective levees broke, and the streets began to flood. What followed was chaos. Thousands of people who had not evacuated before the hurricane now sought refuge at the Superdome and other emergency sites. They found these shelters without provisions, support, protection, or rescue as the country s relief efforts floundered with uncertainty. Violence, looting, and general lawlessness followed as desperate city residents felt abandoned by their country. Find out what happened and why, how rescue efforts were finally organized, and what the president promised for the city of New Orleans.

The book covers the hurricane research that is conducted aboard the aircraft, including the deployment of dropsondes, instruments that measure weather conditions within a hurricane. One of the purposes of the book is to help teachers and their students become more aware of actions they can take to prepare for hurricanes and protect themselves and their families. The hard-cover book is written at the middle school science level and was reviewed and edited by middle school science teachers and scientists. Its content includes science and math activities, a glossary of terms and full-color images. "We must inform our children about the importance of hurricane safety and awareness so that they can, in turn, help educate their families. If this book can play a part in saving even one life during a hurricane event, then it was a worthwhile effort," according to author Diane Stanitski.

Hurricane Floyd was one of the most costly storms in U.S. history, and nowhere did its impact resonate more strongly than in eastern North Carolina. The devastating floods that followed Hurricane Floyd in September 1999 affected half the counties in the state. Fifty-two people lost their lives and tens of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. The floods severely impacted the state's agriculture and livestock industries, eliminated 30,000 jobs, and caused countless hours of human misery for people of all ages, ethnic groups, and social classes.
The destruction and suffering resulting from a disaster often stimulates a call for change. But what happens when the visual reminders are gone? Do communities continue to work toward preventing similar impacts from occurring after future disasters? Drawing on the experience and insights of experts and the people who experienced the disaster firsthand, this ambitious volume describes the challenges that communities in eastern North Carolina faced after Hurricane Floyd. Together the contributors recommend a revision to how eastern North Carolina and other flood-prone regions plan and prepare for natural disasters.

The citizens of New Orleans braced for the hit of Hurricane Katrina and then blew a big sigh of relief once the hurricane came and seemed to go. But within hours of the category 4 storm ripping through the Gulf Coast states, people?s worst fears were realized. The city?s decades-old levees were not high or strong enough to hold back the storm surge caused by Katrina, and several levees burst. Water poured into the city, flooding buildings, homes, and streets. As the water rose, people panicked. Many were swept up in the floods and drowned. Others climbed to their roofs and pleaded for helicopter rescuers to come save them. The federal government and relief organizations mobilized for help, but many complained that relief did not come quickly enough. Survivors began running out of food and water. Some began blaming racial discrimination?as many of the hurricane victims were African American? for the government?s slow response. But were those accusations fair? Or was there anything else that could have been done in the face of Mother Nature?s wrath? In this book, author John Torres takes a very personal look at the devastation of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Try as I might, I still cannot come up with a better description of why I started the Life on the Wicked Stage Ink Blot Awards other than what I wrote the first time I unleashed them on an unsuspecting public, so I?ll once again repeat and then extend those remarks: I created The Life On The Wicked Stage Ink Blot Awards as a celebration. Yes, it's a celebration of the 1 year anniversary of this blog. But it is more than that. It is a celebration of a community that I have come to know and ad

Ta-Nehisi Coates was highly critical of the comparisons of bobby Jindal to Barack Obama. McArdle makes a good point in defending the comparison: Just to take an example that Ta-Nehisi uses, did Obama make some compromise on the Democratic Party?s no-restrictions-on-abortion-at-any-time-no-shut-up-I-CAN?T-HEAR-YOU-LALALALALA platform? Because as far as I know, he?s still toeing the party line there. And that?s just about as extreme, as far from the average American?s opinion on abortion, as

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence.
