David Lawrence: Once you verify that that*s working take the power cord out of your machine and plug it into any other device that requires that power cord. They are usually universal. So any other computer, any other you know hard drive, any sort of peripheral device or printer that uses that power cord see if it works with that. And if that*s a case then it*s your power supply.
Dan: And I have done that indeed all the way upto that point.
David Lawrence: That*s what you need to do. That*s the easy, that*s the poor man*s way of doing it. If you have a bench and you want to test it, you want to disassemble your machine and all that, that*s fine. Now here*s the question. When you turn it on is there any noise whatsoever?
Dan: It won't turn on at all.
David Lawrence: No, no, no it will. The switch will move over right?
Dan: It*s a push button switch.
David Lawrence: Okay.
Dan: And it will move and I can hear it click as it is making contact.
David Lawrence: Right that*s what I am asking. So once it clicks is there a hum, is there a buzz?
Dan: Nothing at all.
David Lawrence: Nothing okay so then I am going to say pretty clearly it*s the power supply. How old is the machine?
Dan: About 2 and half years old, Dell.
David Lawrence: That*s fairly soon for a power supply but that does happen.
Dan: The history before that, just before this was happening I walked into the room and it was almost cycling on and off, on and off. And I pushed the power button and I booted it up.
David Lawrence: It could be a bad switch. So you know you might want to check that. But either way if it*s 2 and half years I would take it to an authorized Dell dealer and have them look it over. It maybe just the switch rather than the power supply. Remember a power supply is second only to a display in terms of being the most expensive repair on the machine. So at this point this is a perfect, perfect excuse for going and getting a new machine and if there is a spouse in your life that is preventing you from doing that then all you have to say look hon look we can spend 300 bucks on replacing the power supply or I can take that $300 and spend it on a $600 computer which would bring us upto date. And I think that that sort of logic which never works on chicks might work in this case, alright?
Dan: It just might. Well thank you very much.
David Lawrence: I appreciate the call. Dan #2.
Dan: How are you doing David?
David Lawrence: I am doing okay. Thank you for calling.

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
