Eliot Spitzer, former Attorney General of New York State, and now their Governor, made a name for himself in the dot-com world, taking every company whose approach to business he disagreed with, whether they actually broke the law in New York State or not, to court.
More often than not, the protracted legal obligations of fighting this relentless profitarian led companies to settle out of court. Unfortunately, most of the booty that changed hands never found its way to the actual victims: over 100 million dollars in fines for Merrill Lynch, and all of it went into the New York State treasury.
As Governor, Spitzer vowed to make ethics his number one priority. Let's hope that extends to his office as well.

The rise to power of Eliot Spitzer, the scourge of Wall Street and one of America’s most controversial politicians, by the reporter who knows his crusade best
Few politicians have burst onto the American scene with as much impact as Eliot Spitzer. He has exposed wrongdoing by stock analysts, mutual fund managers, and insurance brokers, and he has investigated corporations that have misled or defrauded investors and consumers. When federal regulators have fallen down on their responsibilities, Spitzer has stepped in to protect ordinary, middle-class Americans. His actions as the New York State attorney general have made companies change the way they do business, which in turn affects every American with a retirement plan, an insurance policy, or a prescription to fill.
No reporter has had better or more complete behind-the-scenes access to Spitzer’s operation—and to the strategies that have underpinned his crusade against these powerful forces in the American economy—than Brooke A. Masters of The Washington Post. In Spoiling for a Fight, she presents a portrait that is at once dramatic and revealing, raising the question of whether Spitzer’s way of conducting government business is good or bad for America.
Combining passion and zeal with a savvy understanding of the press, Spitzer has brought down some of the biggest names in American finance and now has his sights set on higher office. This revelatory book shows Americans how Spitzer has transformed their lives and what his crusade could mean for the future.

Book Description
What do Michael Milken and Martha Stewart have in common? (Answer: Both became public scapegoats for an outrageous era of greed and excess.) Jack Welch and Jim Fisk? (Answer: Both were captains of industry, eventually undone by extracurricular philandering.) Which was the most outrageous party thrown by a financial baron of the twentieth century? (Answer: Tough call, but either Michael Milken's Predators Ball in 1985, or Dennis Kozlowski's Sardinian birthday bash in 2001, with its vodka-spouting sculpture.) Which U.S. war hero president became party to, and victim of, an unabashed con man known as the Napoleon of Wall Street? (Answer: Ulysses S. Grant, but it's a long story.)
These questions and more are discussed in Scott MacDonald and Jane Hughes' Separating Fools from Their Money. The authors trace the history of financial scandals from the early days of the young republic through the Enron/WorldCom debacle of modern times. A host of colorful characters inhabit the pages of this history, revealing human nature in all of its dubious shades of gray. At the same time, the book exposes themes common to all financial scandals, which remain astonishingly unchanged over more than two centuries--greed, hubris, media connections, self-interested politicians, and booms-gone-bust, to name a few. It explores the role of reformers who emerge in the wake of a scandal, concluding with a fascinating comparison of crusading New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer with his equally crusading and equally ambitious namesake, crime buster Eliot Ness.
Written in an informative and entertaining style, Separating Fools From Their Money should engage the interest of the casual business reader, investors, as well as academic economists interested in supplemental readings for their students.

Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence.
