Joe: It*s terrific, I have just got through. I am currently running a cable modem, high broadband Internet and when I get home on Tuesday I am going to be switching over to what they call DSL like and my question for you is am I going to have any kind of a problem when I disconnect the cable and hook up the DSL Modem and plug it into my Linksys Router . Is it recognizes the address or am I going to have to go trace it to make it work.

David Lawrence: You will actually have to change some settings in the Linksys and you know how to do that through the web browser right.

Joe: No I don't.

David Lawrence: Okay, Linksys routers can actually be managed and you should do this before you make this switch. Go in and check your settings and see what they are. But Linksys routers can be managed by opening up a browser window and typing 192.168.1.1 and I imagine you have never cracked open the manual. So you wouldn*t know this right.

Joe: Well not in about a year and half. I have been running the cable for quiet a while.

David Lawrence: So this is how that Linksys Router is managed. You can actually do all the settings depending upon what the router is capable of doing. You can change all kinds of things; you can make a DHCP Server. You can make all of your IP addresses, interanence, and static, rather than dynamic. You can do a lot of different things. But one of the settings in the Linksys is the gateway and the IP address that is assigned to you by your ISP. Now if you*re switching from cable to DSL that means you are switching ISPs and that means necessarily that you are switching the IP address that is assigned to you. Now in some, in some cases IP addresses are assigned, are assigned on the fly. There will be a pool of IP addresses and this is of course the one address that you need to be able to do anything on the Internet. It will be assigned on demand as you boot your machine or as you use the DSL dialer but in some cases and usually if you pay a little bit extra for it, a couple bucks a month. You get a static IP address, an IP address that never changes. It*s assigned to you and you alone. And that static IP address is necessary, if you want to do certain things with your router. I am not sure what your setup is but I am sure that changing from cable to DSL or to any other format of high-speed broadband because you are changing companies, you are going to be changing IP addresses. Because the IP addresses are assigned company by company by the airing systems. So yes there will be changes and your DSL system should, whoever your provider is, should give you a little kit that tells you how to make those changes.

Joe: Thank you very much sir. I appreciate the help.

David Lawrence: My pleasure, 180039 online it*s our telephone number 18003966546. So I can deal with this very quickly, Tim.

Tim: Hello Dave, you got a very good show there tonight.

David Lawrence: You got 30 seconds my friend. What's question?
