CUSTOMER REVIEW:
Beautifully Brutal Movie
Somehow in my late night meanderings through cable television I found this movie, and having loved Brody's performance in "The Pianist" decided to see what it was about. In the years since, every time it has aired I have watched it with the same fascination as at my first viewing.
As my title states this movie is brutally beautiful. So brutal at times, and so heartbreaking in other times. I have not seen a movie that has so transfixed me with the complexity of the characters. Under other direction the characters could have been shown as black/white, good/bad: the director brings to it beautiful shades of gray.
It could have been easy to hate Jack for what he did to Claire. I would compare their characters as Claire is a fragile flower, delicate, beautiful. I see Jack's fragility in beneath his tough exterior, as he went farther down with Claire, and his outside shell was broken he had the fragillity of a crystal vase.
He has destroyed himself with what he has done to her. In this realization I believe Jack at the end somewhat redeems himself in his writing and explanation. While scrubbing The blood from the floor I feel that every drop that was sunk in the floor was a tear in Jack's soul. Being one who prefers to keep her "rosy glasses" on, I would wish that in some way they would find that brutal, beautiful, fragility within their characters and find a way to be together.
I don't know why I hadn't ordered the film sooner and deprived myself of the beautiful acting in this film, but no more.

Chris (Adrien Brody), an aspiring playwright, pays the bills as a bartender at an upscale New York restaurant and pours his frustrations into his work. Jeanine (Elise Neal), an aspiring singer from a musical family, is the newest waitress on the staff. He's Italian American and she's African American, but the chemistry is there. All that stands between them is Chris's unresolved feelings for his ex (pop star Lauryn Hill in a cameo), the reverberations of his blue-collar father's dinner-table racism, and the unspoken and usually ignored but unavoidable issue of race. Eric Bross (Ten Benny, also with Brody) has a light touch with his ensemble cast--which also features Malcolm-Jamal Warner as a well-spoken law student and Jesse L. Martin of TV's Law and Order as a philosophical line cook--and the thoughtful script. The issues simmer below the surface of the individual dramas, romantic complications, and personal struggles with self-esteem and responsibility that buzz through the restaurant, finally boiling over in a raw but dramatically restrained finale. Much of the drama floats between clear-eyed honesty and hip glibness, but Bross and his cast anchor the drama in vivid, complicated characters who bring the film to life. Restaurant, which sat on the shelf before receiving a short theatrical run, is no Do The Right Thing, but in its own respectful way manages to cast a fresh look at race relations. --Sean Axmaker

And where better then Mario's funeral home?

The Maura Tierney Show
If you love Maura Tierney like I do, you gotta see this movie. She is extraordinary. I've never been a big fan of Adrien Brody, but he is EXCELLENT in "Oxygen." It is a tight thriller with some really great twists. If you are claustrophobic in the least, make sure you watch this in the space of a large living room. Highly recommended.

Winner of the prestigious Golden Palm award at the 2002 Cannes film festival, The Pianist is the film that Roman Polanski was born to direct. A childhood survivor of Nazi-occupied Poland, Polanski was uniquely suited to tell the story of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Polish Jew and concert pianist (played by Adrien Brody) who witnessed the Nazi invasion of Warsaw, miraculously eluded the Nazi death camps, and survived throughout World War II by hiding among the ruins of the Warsaw ghetto. Unlike any previous dramatization of the Nazi holocaust, The Pianist steadfastly maintains its protagonist's singular point of view, allowing Polanski to create an intimate odyssey on an epic wartime scale, drawing a direct parallel between Szpilman's tenacious, primitive existence and the wholesale destruction of the city he refuses to abandon. Uncompromising in its physical and emotional authenticity, The Pianist strikes an ultimate note of hope and soulful purity. As with Schindler's List, it's one of the greatest films ever made about humanity's darkest chapter. --Jeff Shannon

Toronto Watch: Actresses Weisz, Hawkins, Williams Will Pop Given the hundreds of movies unspooling in Toronto, key press in LA and NY are getting a head start on some of the screenings that will get piled up there. It's impossible to see everything. Of the films I've seen, three masterful performances by women could take off in Toronto. Hayley Atwell as Lady Elizabeth 'Bess' Spencer and Keira Knightley as Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire in The Duchess Photo: Paramount Vantage I may poke a little bit of fun at Keira Knightley's expense on occassion for taking on so many period pieces, but one thing is for certain, she knows how to pick 'em. I loved Atonement and Pride and Prejudice and can't wait to see The Duchess, which hits theaters on September 26th, but will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept

• Elsa Pataky is with Adrien Brody
I can only imagine what the cameraman was thinking when Adrien Brody pointed him out to girlfriend Elsa Pataky. ?Can they see me? No way can they see me. I?m hidden so well in this tree. It looks like they can see me though. Is he pointing right at me? Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit!?
