David Lawrence: Just for grins were there any storms in your area?

Linda: No.

David Lawrence: Okay so nobody could have you know shuffled on the carpet, walked over and maybe touched the machine and zapped it.

Linda: No.

David Lawrence: Okay then your CD player is broke I mean I guess that*s a right way to put it. You haven*t updated the system software, you haven*t done any of the typical things that I would look to, to find out why Windows Media is no longer recognizing that device as a valid CD burner or CD player. What I would suggest you to do before you go to the trouble of talking it to the stores since it's external, I would unplug it.

Linda: Okay.

David Lawrence: Reboot the machine, let the machine recognize the fact that that device isn*t there, it won*t recognize, it won*t get loaded it start up, it won*t see a device there. Then shut the machine down, plug the device back in and then turn the power on, what will happen is plug-in-play will takeover. The device will be recognized as the machine is starting up, it sorts of gather all the information that it needs for all the devices. And it will say, hey look at this, there is a new piece of hardware here. I think I am going to, hey you want to play with that, right? Alright, alright fine. So you have seen that before and you would find a new hardware screen, comes up.

Linda: Right, right. So do you think it could be the device that*s all of a sudden, I mean it*s couple of years old maybe it *

David Lawrence: This will eliminate that or verify that, that*s the whole thing. You could do the straight forward thing which is to take it to the store and ask them to look at it, but that will cost you 40 bucks. So in this case, let*s try this first just to be sure you might also just for grins, try different cable just to make sure that nothing is happened to the cable, got twisted or broke or something you know would have stress on it or whatever. And then if it still doesn*t work then you are going to have to bring it into the shop and see what happens. If it works on another machine, you could try that as well. You want to sort of eliminate all the chains all the, as Robert De Niro put a chinks in the chain. But you don*t want to have chinks in your chain.
