Lee: Okay and then my computer has an 80 gigabyte hard drive. How big partition would you have on that drive for using it for backup?

David Lawrence: I would give it the bulk of it. I mean I usually recommend the people get about three times the capacity of their drive they are backing up or drives that they are backing up because sometimes they are backing up another External FireWire drive on the same FireWire chain because the first time you do the backup you are going to backup everything as of that moment. The next successive iteration of the backup you will only be backing up those files that have changed. You won*t need to backup all the rest of them and of course Retrospect takes care of this automatically. So if you have an 80-gig drive and say you have used 60 gigs of that then of the 240 gig drive that you have created the 300 you will use about 1/5th of the drive. If you are doing a lot of video editing then you may have some very large files that you are only changing a little bit of but they are changing them the less. And those who will get backed up next time around so you may end up having to restore your external target fairly frequently. I don*t think it*s a good idea just between you and I. I don*t think it*s a good idea to save a few pennies and I realize it*s not a few pennies, it*s a couple 100 bucks but saving a few pennies on not separating out the drive that you are writing your video to and your backup because if something happens to that drive while you are doing video work on it then you all of a sudden screwed up your backup as well. I really think the best thing to do and I have got a very similar situation to you. I use Pro Tools all the time I have two External FireWire drives one that*s a Faster Glyph and one that is a OneTouch External and I backup both my internal hard drive on my powerbook and my external Glyph which is 120 both of them 60 and 120 onto a 300-gig FireWire drive and then I recycle that every two months or so that*s about how long it takes. But with video files it may happen more often. I would get another drive just one jerks opinion especially if you are making money, if you are doing this for a living.

Lee: Now this is for a personal stuff, for my new baby Sam.

David Lawrence: Well which is I mean again that*s pretty valuable stuff, so you don*t want to lose that, so I would consider that. If money is an option I understand but if you can I would get a separate drive to do the backup from the one you are doing the actual work on.

Lee: Great, thank you very much.

David Lawrence: And you have already got the best option out there. I just go get another one.

Lee: Great, thank you.

David Lawrence: I will talk to you later. 180039 online is our telephone number 180039664546, Jim.
