In 1995, United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali said, "CNN [the Cable News Network] is the sixteenth member of the [fifteen member United Nations] Security Council," Scholars as well as diplomats have recognized the existence of a link between communications and diplomacy, but up until now the implications of this relationship have been left unexplored. In this work, the author studies the historic interconnectedness between communications and diplomacy, how communications have historically determined the practice of diplomacy, and how, with the development of global television, communications can determine diplomatic outcomes under certain conditions. This work also examines the ways in which today's broadcasting will shape foreign policy processes in the future and the future impact of global television in world politics.

Product Description
Edited for Television is a concise, accessible examination of the role of network and cable news media in American presidential campaigns. The second edition acknowledges the political changes that have taken place since the first edition, namely the key policy battles of Clinton?s first two years, the midterm elections, Clinton?s revival as a political force, and the 1996 election. Through all these changes, television continues to cover politics largely as it did four years ago. In particular, television reporters still make themselves and their concerns a central component of the political story.A new closing chapter considers the fact that, despite a deliberate effort by reporters to make their work more substantive in 1996, issue coverage remained sporadic and episodic while thematic content of cable and broadcast news again emphasized the horse race, personalities, process, and, to a lesser extent, nonissues. Examples of CNN and ABC news coverage from 1996 make interesting illustrations for the updated chapters.

From the supplier: The CNN Effect, the Cable News Network's influence on policy makers, has not pressured officials into making spontaneous changes in foreign policy, but it has changed how foreign policy is managed. CNN and other television networks are not dictating foreign policy by their instant news transmissions, which often require government officials to respond readily. TV viewers have become desensitized to atrocities and tragedies.

After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets.
